Calcium activation
What is calcium activation?
Calcium activation means placing oocytes, injected with one sperm cell during an ICSI procedure, in a unique medium of calcium ionophore. The process is performed only because of indications and lasts approximately 2 hours. The medium aims to mimic the natural calcium activation, occurring in a woman’s body after the fertilization of the oocyte by one single sperm cell.
How does calcium activation help?
After a series of IVF/ICSI procedures with own oocytes and without fertilization, calcium activation helps for the fertilization of at least part of the oocytes. This method increases the chances for couples with no fertilization in a series of IVF/ICSI procedures with up to 20%.
When is required?
Calcium activation is performed in cases of:
- Repeatable lack of fertilization of all oocytes (TFF - Total Fertilization Failure)
- Embryos with a higher percentage of fragmentation and incorrectly cleavage
abnormally fertilized oocytes in previous IVF/ICSI procedure
