Assisted Reproductive Technologies

With specialists with over 30 years of experience in assisted reproduction, Dr. Shterev Hospital is a pioneer in the implementation of ART in Bulgaria. With its highly qualified doctors and embryologists, modern facilities and equipment, in accordance with the highest international standards, patients are offered a wide range of advanced assisted reproductive technologies and methods, the main ones being intrauterine insemination, IVF (in vitro fertilization), ICSI (PESA, TESE, FISH, pre-implantation genetic) diagnostics (PGD / PGS), laser-assisted hatching, DNA fragmentation of spermatozoa (MACS), co-cultivation of endometrial cells embryos, IMSI (selection of morphological and organellar sperm level and injection into the ovum, and cells) evaluation of the zona pellucida, ERA (implantation window analysis and personalized embryo transfer), freezing and cryopreservation of sperm, ova or embryos, etc. In resolving complex cases, Dr. Shterev Hospital's team consults with world-renowned partner partners from leading reproductive health clinics in the United Kingdom, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, Israel, Greece, and Turkey. We are proud with over 6000 infants conceived through in vitro or other reproductive techniques.

Fetal medicine

The department of fetal medicine applies the modern possibilities for solving extremely complex cases of malformations of the fetus, and the team of the medical institution is a pioneer in the development of this innovative for the country medical specialty. The Dr. Shterev Hospital’s Fetal Medicine Specialized Unit, established in 2013, is the only one of its kind in Bulgaria and gives a chance for a successful exit from pregnancies that were recently considered like doomed. The sector's doctors work in close collaboration with the renowned School of Prof. Kipros Nikolaidis of King's College Hospital, UK.

In 2014 and 2015 for the first time in Bulgaria, in Dr. Shterev Hospital were implemented three innovative methods that give a chance to rescue babies before they are born - fetal laser surgery, intrauterine fetal balloon surgery catheter, and intrauterine blood transfusion. Despite the difficulties, the pregnancies have been successfully completed, and today, families are enjoying lively and healthy newborns. The interventions are carried out by the Head of the Department Dr. Petya Chaveeva, the first Bulgarian specialist who has undergone several years of systematic training in fetal medicine and mini-invasive fetal laser surgery.

Operative Gynecology

In Dr. Shterev Hospital we perform both small surgical interventions (dilatation of the cervical canal, polypectomy, curettage, artificial termination of pregnancy up to 12 years, puncture of the cyst with ablation) and laparocystectomy, laparotomyectomy, plastic surgery is performed uterine tubes, uterine cervix, uterine cervicalisation, cervical electrocoagulation, hysterectomy, etc. Special focus is on the development of endoscopic surgery with state-of-the-art equipment for performing hysteroscopy (diagnostic and surgical) and laparoscopy (diagnostic and surgical). The postoperative stay and the recovery process of the patients are provided in comfortably furnished rooms with one or two beds with a private bathroom. In June 2015, the expanded gynecological ward was opened on two floors of the hospital. It included three new operating rooms and even more comfortable conditions for postoperative stay. The ambition of the hospital team is to make all gynecological surgeries performed through mini-invasive endoscopic techniques gradually, and open gynecological surgery to remain in history.

Obstetrics

In the field of obstetrics, Dr. Shterev Hospital offers high-quality medical and midwifery care for delivery in a normal and surgical way. In 2014 a renovated and expanded maternity war was opened, and it offers comfortable and cozy conditions for the future mothers and their babies.

Genetics Lab

In 2015, Dr. Shterev Hospital created a modern laboratory equipped with high-tech equipment for applying the capabilities of modern medical genetics. It offers a wide range of genetic and cytogenetic studies such as chromosomal analysis for chorion biopsy and amniocentesis, microarray analysis, DNA analysis of the most common aneuploidy, genetic studies of congenital thrombophilia, DNA analysis of infectious diseases and more.

Initiatives for the patients

Dr. Shterev Hospital develops various initiatives such as group and individual school for future parents, an initiative "What is coming on" for patients undergoing first in vitro procedure, Days of open doors in the maternity ward, etc.

Specialized aqua sector

In November 2016 Dr. Shterev Hospital opened the first of its kind in Bulgaria an innovative aqua sector specializing for pregnant women, mothers with babies and parents with children. The sector has a swimming pool, jacuzzi, and sauna.

The hospital includes an outpatient unit with extended diagnostic and consultative activity with 18 outpatient clinics offering healthcare in addition to obstetrics and gynecology and in various medical specialties such as:
