Ovarian reserve testing
What is an ovarian reserve?
Ovarian reserve means the functional potential of the ovarian, i.e., the quantity and quality of the oocytes. Women's reproductive aging is a consequence of the decrease in these quantities and quality. Between 30 and 40 years women lose about ¾ of their follicular reserve - a phenomenon with a clear effect over their fertility potential. At the same time, the quantity and quality of the ovarian reserve of women in the same age could vary significantly.
When is testing required?
There is a variety of tests for ovarian reserve evaluation, and the correct assessment is of vital importance for choosing the proper infertility treatment. Through tests for ovarian reserve the chances for pregnancy could be predicted, and also the ovarian reaction to different stimulation protocols in an IVF/ICSI procedure.
In Dr. Shterev Hospital we use two types of noninvasive tests for ovarian reserve with different informative capacity:
- Testing of basal hormones in the early follicular phase: FSH, Estradiol, Inhibin B, АМH
- Ultrasound examination: number of antral follicles, ovarian size, doppler ultrasound exam of the ovarian blood vessels
