What is Vitality test?
Often the akinetic (still) sperm cells in the ejaculate exceed the number of the normal and hypokinetic semen. Not in every case akinetic sperm cells mean dead cells. The Vitality test helps to determine the exact number of alive and dead sperm cells in the ejaculate through the so-called vital coloring, which allows the differentiation between both. The coloring is based on the integrity of their plasma membrane. The Vitality test is a form of critical assessment for the patients with less than 40% progressively moveable sperm cells. The presence of a higher amount still and non-vital cells indicates for pathology in the epididymis. The higher percentage of alive but immobile sperm cell leads to structural defects in their tails.
