Scientific and Research activities

Over the last few years, the focus of Scientific and Research at the Dr. Shterev Hospital has focused on areas that are of great importance for the treatment of infertility couples, namely, determining the optimal criteria for predicting the outcome of ART procedures (Dr. Tanya Timeva, PhD), diagnosis, treatment and effect of bacterial vaginosis in patients with infertility (Dr. Petya Andreeva, PhD), diagnosis and treatment of patients with poor ovarian response (Dr. Maria Yunakova). In the field of embryology, the studies focus on the development of techniques for the application of pre-implantation genetic diagnostics in patients with an in vitro procedures (Dr. Tanja Milacic, PhD), the development of protocols for freezing eggs and embryos (Ljuboslava Valkova), experimental studies on the decidualization of endometrial stromal cells in patients with repeated implantation failures, the effect of stress on sperm quality in ART procedures (Desislava Dyulgerova) and others.

The results of these studies are discussed weekly within all-doctor meetings with the participation of all physicians and biologists/embryologists. Clinical-histologic-pathoanatomical meetings with the medical staff and the clinical histopathologist are held once a month, as well as clinical-laboratory discussions to compare their own laboratory results with control results from other laboratories.

Dr. Shterev Hospital was also a partner in the project "Establishment of a Center for Research on Reproductive Health Problems" under the competition of the Ministry of Education and Science called "Development of the scientific infrastructure". The purpose of the project is to join forces to undertake a joint activity for the implementation of a research project that aims to isolate, cultivate and characterize stem cells in the male or female reproductive system.
