Presentation of our Maternity Ward
The Maternity Ward of Dr, Shterev Hospital was opened on December 9th, 2006, the day when the Bulgarian Orthodox Church celebrates St. Anna. She is the mother of the Holy Mother and is the patron of this hospital sector for more than 12 years, and every year on this date we sanctify the Maternity Ward. Because of the increasing interest from our patients about the opportunity to give birth in Dr. Shterev Hospital, eight years later, on December 9th, 2014, we officially opened the expanded and renovated Maternity Ward.
The Maternity Ward of Dr. Shterev Hospital contains two labor rooms, a delivery room for natural childbirth, operation halls for Cesarean section, postpartum sector for intensive observation and care, and comfortable hospital rooms for the recovery.
In the labor rooms, we look after and prepare the women in labor for the upcoming delivery. Through modern equipment the doctors and midwives observe the heart beating of the babies and the contractions of the women.
The delivery room is furnished with a unique anatomic bed made in Germany, which provides the women with higher comfort and smooths the delivery. Learn more about the natural childbirth in Dr. Shterev Hospital here. The two operation halls for Cesarean Section are with modern equipment according to the highest European standards. Learn more details about the operation delivery here.
In the sector for intensive observation, we take care of the women, and their stay in this sector depends on the delivery type. We monitor their signs on modern reanimation equipment. The medical care in this sector is provided by an Ob/Gyn and reanimation specialists, and a midwife.
In their first hours, the babies are in a special warmer room for their more straightforward adaptation. The place is equipped with the last generation incubator for intensive care after premature birth, and the babies in it are under the medical supervision of a neonatologist.
In the hospital rooms for the recovery period, we provide high-quality care in a cozy environment to make sure that the stay of the women and the babies are nice and comfortable. The mothers and their children are under the constant care of qualified staff - doctors and midwives. Every recovery room in our renovated Maternity Ward has its bathroom and is equipped with TV, air conditioner, refrigerator, and Wi-Fi.

The stay in Dr. Shterev Hospital is three days after natural childbirth and five days after Cesarean Section. After the operation delivery, the first 24 hours the woman stays under intensive observation in the reanimation of the Maternity Ward. In the whole period of their stay, the women and the babies are daily checked by Ob/Gyn specialist and neonatologist. If necessary, we provide consultation with a psychologist. The medical care in the recovery period includes 24 hours of midwives’ observation.
In Dr. Shterev Hospital we care about the comfort and serenity of every patient, and because of that, we provide a full range of care, supplies, and accessories for the fastest recovery of the mother and the baby after the birth. See the price of the delivery here and learn what it contains during our special initiatives.
In Dr. Shterev Hospital we follow the principle of non-separation of the mother from her baby. It is the best way to trigger the maternal instinct and the physical processes in the mother’s body, connected with lactation. The newborns are placed in their comfortable beds with a regulation of the height, and the position, which brings them and their mothers highest comfort. If the woman needs more time and calmness for her recovery, the baby is placed in a separate room until she feels ready to take it with herself. Again, if she wants, the newborn may stay during the night with the midwives in a separate room so the mother could rest.
The natural nutrition is best for the babies, that is why the midwives provide the women with advice for breastfeeding and how to turn it into a desirable and easy process. In cases of absence of breast milk, we offer high-quality formula. Learn about the breastfeeding initiatives which Dr. Shterev Hospital regularly organizes and book your participation at +359 2 920 0901.
During their hospital stay the newborn are daily cleaned, which includes care for their belly button, skin, eyes and ears, and regularly diapers changing. The hospital discharge is the most emotional moment for everyone. It occurs in our special hall, where parents could welcome their guests, make first photos with the newest family member in the company of the Ob/Gyn specialist and the midwife whose have helped in the delivery of the baby.
Forty days after the delivery women have to come for a check-up with the Ob/Gyn specialist, so they can be sure that the most crucial period of their time has passed successfully and are capable of taking care for their growing babies healthy and happy. Thus, from the moment of detecting the pregnancy until the first days of the newborn, we provide high-quality medical care, individual approach, comfort and coziness, which every woman who is becoming a mother needs.
