Ablation (Curettage)
What is Ablation (Curettage)?
The Ablation (Curettage) is the removal of the endometrium (the inner epithelial layer of the uterus) or the tissues of the cervix by scooping them.
How do we perform it?
We perform the procedure through the vagina under a spinal or in some cases full anesthesia. The scooping of the tissues is made with a curette, and the removed parts are histologically tested.
When is it required?
This procedure is required in cases of:
- miscarriage
- termination of a pregnancy for medical reasons or by woman's desire
- abnormal, prolonged, non-menstrual uterine bleeding, unaffected by a conservative medical therapy
- endometrial polyp
- increased endometrial thickening
- doubts about a malignant process in the cervix or the uterus (diagnostic ablation)
What is the minimum hospital stay?
One day
What are the contraindications for performing ablation (curettage)?
Uterine or fallopian tubes infection
What is the recovery period?
The woman may have uterine bleeding for up to ten days after the procedure. The medical specialist will specify a time, when the patient should avoid vaginal tampons, bathtubs, swimming pools, etc. It is required for the woman to have sexual contacts with condoms because after the manipulation the transmission of infections is extremely easy.
