What is a cervical cerclage?
The cerclage is a small surgical intervention, including a suture of the cervix to prevent miscarriage or premature birth. The best time to make it at the beginning of the second trimester of the pregnancy between 12 and 14 gestational weeks. The doctor removes the thread two weeks before the due date or when it is safe to start the labor.
When is it applicable?
- shortened cervix and open cervical canal
- previous miscarriages in the second part of the gestation
- previous premature birth
- uterine abnormalities like bicornuate or unicornuate uterus
How do we perform it?
The cerclage is applied under general anesthesia with four or five stitches under the uterine arteries.
