Intraiterine Insemination (IUI) - general information
With Intrauterine insemination – IUI technique the treated sperm is inserted into the woman uterus by dint of a special, very plastic and thin catheter. The procedure is set to be done just a few hours before or after the patient's ovulation. It is possible the need of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) (Pregnyl) injection for better timing of the ovulation or doing the insemination during a natural or stimulated cycle (during this cycle the use of medicines and forming more than one follicle is a need).

What are the indications for using IUI?
Instructions for using intrauterine insemination with treated partner's semen:
o unexplained infertility;
o man's light subfertility (light Oligoasthenoteratozoospermia, Azoospermia or Teratozoospermia or combination of three of them);
o postcoital test bad results;
o antisperm antibodies in the male, or female patient;
o male sperm disorders (erectile dysfunction, retrograde ejaculation, spinal cord traumas, and dysfunctions, etc.)
o after female ovulation reduction.
Instructions for using intrauterine insemination with treated donor's semen (different than partner):
o women without a husband or a permanent sexual partner;
o women, whose husband suffers from serious subfertility problems or Azoospermia;
o women, whose husband suffers from genetic or other diseases that can affect the baby or his partner;
What are the contraindications for using IUI?
o blocked tubes;
o partly blocked tubes, with high risk for ectopic pregnancy;
o women vaginal/cervical, pelvic inflammatory decease;
o men with active inflammatory diseases of the genitourinary system (presence of infectious agents in the sperm);
o women diagnosed with contraindications for conceiving, pregnancy, and delivery;
o anovulatory women who had not had successful ovulation induction in the specific cycle;
o advanced reproductive age - women at 45 and above
What medical test you should do before intrauterine insemination procedure?
Women:
o basal hormones (LH, FSH, Estradiol, Prolactin, TSH);
o Sonohysterogram, Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) or laparoscopic test for Blocked Fallopian Tubes;
o Ultrasonography test for ovulation;
o microbiology of the vaginal discharge – less than 30 days before the intrauterine insemination procedure;
o valid cervical smear (PAP smear);
o blood test for Hepatitis B, C, HIV, and Syphilis – less than three months before the procedure;
o Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) test.
Men:
o semen analysis;
o microbiology of the semen –less than 30 days before the intrauterine insemination procedure;
o blood test for Hepatitis B, C, HIV, and Syphilis – less than three months before the procedure.
