Fetal morphology – important examination between 19 to 23 weeks of gestation
What is the fetal morphology scan?
The fetal morphology scan is a highly specialized ultrasound examination of all the major organs and systems of the fetus. Depending on the terms of gestation it gives information for the fetus development and the course of the pregnancy.
The goal of the study is to evaluate the anatomy of the fetus and to exclude or detect abnormalities that occur later in the pregnancy. The size and growth of the fetus, the placenta, the umbilical cord, and the amniotic fluid, the cervix, the blood flow in the different vessels of the fetus are assessed.
It is done with an empty bladder, transabdominal (through the abdomen) and, if necessary, to reach areas that are difficult to achieve and transvaginal (via the vagina). For this purpose, 2D echography and 3D and 4D echography can be used with or without Doppler testing.
The results are ready right after the examination. If a birth problem is found in the fetus, the gynecologist will discuss the findings with the patient and the treatment options.
