Biopsy - accents
The biopsy is a test performed under colposcope observation. It is a collection of a small tissue sample from the changing area of the cervix.
The test aims to evaluate the stage of the histological changes in the tissues and if necessary, to lead to the proper treatment.
The changes in the cervix fount with biopsy are called cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and they have different names according to the stage of the tissue changes - CIN I, CIN II, and CIN III.
Biopsy
When is a biopsy advisable?
The biopsy is advisable in cases of atopic areas detected with colposcopy examination. The test aims a diagnosis when there is hesitation between benign and malignant formation.
What is the preparation for a biopsy?
It is required to avoid vaginal tampons, vaginal cleaning kits (douching), vaginal creams and medications, and sexual contacts at least 24 hours before the biopsy collection. The optimal days for colposcopy are between the 10th and the 14th day of the menstrual cycle, so there will not be any menstrual bleeding.
How is biopsy performed?
After detecting atypical areas during colposcopy, the doctor collects a small sample (biopsy) from this zone through special clips. This procedure is called a targeted biopsy, and most women feel only a slight twitch during the collection of the sample. The tissue is sent to e specialized laboratory where it is examined under a microscope by a histopathologist. After the procedure, slight bleeding is possible for 3-4 days.
What are the possible results from a biopsy?
If the biopsy does not show any changes, then the result is typical (without pathological changes). If they are any changes, they will be assessed and classified according to their stage. The changes in the cervix fount with biopsy are called cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and they are staged like this:
CIN I - slight dysplasia: there are changed cells only in the lower one-third of the epithelial layer of the cervix
CIN II - moderate dysplasia: there are transformed cells in the lower half of the epithelial layer of the cervix, the upper part is with standard structure
CIN III - severe dysplasia: there are changed cells in the lower two-thirds of the cervical layer and carcinoma in situ
The treatment protocol depends on the severity of the detected changes.
