Colposcopy - accents
Colposcopy is a specialized non-invasive gynecological examination, in which a detailed examination of the cervix, vagina and external genitalia is performed with a special microscope (colposcope) under intense illumination and a magnification (4 to 40 times).
The applied optical zoom reveals structures inaccessible to both the "unarmed" eye and the microscopic examination.
Colposcopy stands at the border between macroscopic and microscopic examination. The prototype of the contemporary colposcope was constructed in 1925 by H. Hinselmann.
Colposcopy
The colposcopy examination aims to determine normal and benign epithelial findings from suspicious and malignant and to point out these changes that require histological examination (biopsy). The colposcopy at the Dr. Shterev Medical Complex is done with a new generation of videocassoscopes. This allows image storage and creates a database for better monitoring of the patient's condition and comparison of images in different periods. Thus, if necessary, consultations can be made with doctors from home and abroad.
Whom are the colposcopy examinations for?
The examination is performed when there is a pathological result of the cytoplasm, and an established HPV presence is found. You will be prescribed such an examination in case of suspicion of pre-cancerous conditions (pre-cancerous) and cancerous changes in the cervix, vagina, and external genitalia. Colposcopy is also done prior to cervical manipulation (biopsy, diarrhea-coagulation, LEEP excision, conception, etc.) and afterward for follow-up the treatment results. One of the most important applications of this type of screening is the prophylactic gynecological examination.
What is the preparation for a colposcopy?
It is desirable at least 24 hours before the colposcopic examination not to use vaginal tampons, not to have vaginal swabs or to have sexual contacts. Also - do not use vaginal globules and creams. It is a must not have menstrual bleeding - the optimal days for colposcopy are 10-14 days of the menstrual cycle.
How is the colposcopy done?
The procedure is done in a gynecological sector, the woman sits in the gynecological chair, and the gynecologist puts the speculum in the vagina for better visibility of the cervix and the cervical canal (such as when taking a cytoplasm). The doctor examines the uterine cervix colposcopy using different solutions (acetic acid sample and lye solution) to allow better differentiation of the altered areas. During the examination, cervical secretion may be required for HPV presence, cytoplasm, and in the presence of atypical sites, take a small tissue sample from the biopsy to assess the extent of the changes histologically and to appoint treatment.
What will you feel during the colposcopy?
The procedure is not painful, although the woman may experience slight discomfort or slight bleeding. This is not due to the colposcopy (the colposcope remains outside the woman's body), but due to additional manipulations performed along with the colposcopy.
What are the possible results of the colposcopy?
With the colposcopic examination, cervical findings are divided into two groups:
– Typical cervical findings that do not need histological clarification;
– Sperm cervical findings - changes are requiring histological clarification.
